Gabapentin is available in the market as Neurontin, its brand name. It’s an anti-epileptic drug, that is also popular as an anticonvulsant medication. It affects chemicals in the body nerves that are involved in causing seizures with some types of pain. The medication is used together in combination with other medicines to treat seizures and children (at least 3 years old) and adults. The doctors also prescribe the medication for the treatment of neuropathic pain, generally caused by herpes virus or shingles. Although gabapentin is a popular medicine, it may cause life-threatening complications. Older persons and COPD patients are at higher risk for breathing problems.
